Alexandria Defeats Spuds In Section Volleyball Final

The Moorhead Girls battled at the Fergus Falls Gym playing against the Alexandria Cardinals for the chance to go to the Minnesota 2A State Tournament Friday night, but it wasn't meant to be for the Spuds. Moorhead fell in three straight sets 25-16, 27-25 and 25-23.

Spud Volleyball Defeats St. Michael-Albertville To Gain Spot In Section 8 Final Against Alexandria

It took all five sets to get a victory over St. Michael-Albertville but the Spuds pulled out a win to move on to the MN 2A Section 8 Championship Match Friday. The scores were 25-12, 25-18, 26-28, 22-25 and 16-14 in a nail biter finish. The tie breaker set was tied 14-14 and the St. Michael-Albertville serve went long, then Laura Holsen completed the victory with a kill on the next point. Moorhead's Anna Peterson had 12 kills, 11 for Alison Bruggeman and Holsen, and 10 for Abby Tietz. The Spuds are now 20-7 on the season and will play for a State Tournament birth on Friday against Alexandria starting at 7 PM in Fergus Falls.

Volleyball Takes Fifth Place In Pumkin Classic

The Spuds defeated Nevis then Wilmar in the 5th place match in the Pumkin Classic hosted at MHS over the weekend of Oct. 16-17. The Spuds will take on Marshall at 1:30 p.m. in Marshall on October 24 in the final regular season match before the playoffs begin. The Spuds are now 17-7 on the season.

Volleyball Tops Ada-Borup, Falls To Sauk Rapids

Spuds defeat Ada-Borup 25-19, 25-10 then later fall to Sauk Rapids 25-23, 25-22 on the first day of the Pumpkin Classic held at Moorhead High School. The Spuds are now 15-7 on the season and will continue play in the Pumkin Classic Saturday at MHS.

Spuds Sweep Fergus Falls In Volleyball

The Moorhead Volleyball team improved to 14-6 on the season with a sweep of Fergus Falls 25-14, 25-14, 25-9. Alison Bruggeman had 12 kills and KayLani Penas had 6 kills and 22 assists in the match. The Spuds have now gone 9-2 in the last 11 matches.

Volleyball Team Wins 3 Matches At Alexandria Invite

Moorhead strated the day defeating Alexandria 26-24, 25-20 in the opening match.

The Spuds went three matches to get their last victory on the day over Minnetonka 25-15, 23-25, 15-11. Alison Bruggeman had 31 kills for the day, Abby Tietz tallied 19 kills and Cory Gilbertson finished with 59 digs as the Spuds improved to 13-6 on the season and are now 8-2 in their last 10 matches.

Volleyball Gets Big Win Over Bemidji In Section Play

The Moorhead Girls Volleyball team was charged up Thursday night as they faced 17-2 Minnesota Section rival Bemidji in the MHS Gym. The Spuds won the first set 25-19, dropped the second set 23-25 after a great comeback running off 6 straight points until it was 23-24. The third set was all Spuds again 25-16 and the final set started the Lumberjacks way but Moorhead showed their determination and regained the lead and never let go winning the set and the match 25-15. Cory Gilbertson led the Spuds with 25 digs and Abby Tietz added 9 kills and 3 blocks as the Spuds improve to 10-5 on the season and have won 5 of their last 6 matches, Bemidji falls to 17-3 on the season. Next on the schedule is the Alexandria Invitational starting Saturday.

In the second match of the season against Detroit Lakes the Spuds were up to the challenge again defeating the Lakers 25-20, 25-17, 25-9 for a 3 set win in Detroit Lakes. KayLani Penas led the Spuds with 16 assists and 12 digs in the match and Alison Bruggeman had 8 kills and 2 blocks. Moorhead improves to 9-5 on the season and will play Bemidji at home on Thursday, October 8 at 7:30 p.m.

Spud Girls Volleyball Defeat Detroit Lakes

The Moorhead Spud Volleyball team defeated the Lakers from Detroit Lakes in three games tonight at the MHS Gym. The Spuds were led by Alison Bruggeman with 10 kills and Laura Holsen had 8 kills while KayLani Penas had 4 blocks and Cory Gilbertson had 14 digs. A special Breast Cancer Research fundraiser was held as State Bank and Subway and a few individuals contributed based on the number of digs by both teams for the entire match. Overall 57 digs were recorded and a grand total of $144 was raised on the night. The Spuds improve to 8-5 on the season, winners of 3 out of the last 4 matches and will next travel to Marshall for a Saturday, Oct. 3 match starting at 1:00 p.m.

Volleyball Team Top Fargo North

Moorhead defeated the Fargo North Spartans in four sets 25-21, 25-19, 20-25, 25-21 in non-conference action Tuesday night in the Spud Gym. The Spuds were lead by Alison Bruggeman and Anna Peterson with nine kills each while Cory Gilbertson had 27 assists on the night. The Spuds improved to 7-5 on the season and will take on Detroit Lakes on Friday, Oct. 1 at 7:30 p.m. in the MHS Gym.

Volleyball Splits At Apple Valley Tourney

The Spud Volleyball team regrouped for a sweep of Owatonna Saturday winning 26-24, 25-19 as Alison Bruggeman contributed 10 kills and two aces. Moorhead later fell to Eden Prairie in its second match at the Apple Valley Tournament, 18-25, 25-22, 7-15. The Spuds are now 6-5 on the season and return home to play Fargo North at the MHS Gym on Tuesday, Sept. 29.

Moorhead defeated Alexandria 25-21, 15-25, 25-23, 25-20 in MN 3A, Section 8 Play Tuesday night at the Moorhead High School Gym. The Spuds improved to 5-2 on the season as KayLani Penas had 11 kills and 19 assists and Laura Holsen had 11 kills. Moorhead will play in the Apple Valley Invite starting Friday, September 25 at 5:00 p.m.

Chaska swept the Spuds 25-21, 25-14, 25-18 Saturday in Chaska. Alison Bruggeman had 12 kills while KayLani Penas 11 assists and nine digs for the Spuds now 4-2 on the season. The Spuds will take on Alexandria on Tuesday, September 22 at 7:30 p.m. in the MHS Gym.

The Moorhead Spuds fell to Burnsville 25-17, 19-25, 25-18, 25-21 in four sets. Alison Bruggeman had 18 kills and KayLani Penas had 26 assists for Moorhead now 4-1 on the season. The Spuds will play at Chaska today at 1:00 p.m.

Volleyball Team Takes Match Against Perham

The Moorhead Volleyball team continues to roll as they defeated Perham 3-1 in Perham Tuesday night 24-26, 25-20, 25-16, 25-8. The Spuds were led by Alison Bruggeman with 19 kills, Cory Gilbertson had 29 digs and Taylor Baldwin had 7 aces as Moorhead stayed undefeated on the season 4-0 and will next play on the road in Burnsville, Friday, September 18 at 6:00 p.m. then again in Chaska, Saturday, September 19 at 1:00 p.m.

Spud Girls Defeat Rival DGF In Three Sets

The Moorhead Spud Volleyball team continued their streak of straight set victories, now with a total of 9 taking three straight from DGF Tuesday night at the MHS Gym - 25-17, 25-19, 25-17. The Spuds spread iaround their offense as Alison Bruggeman led Moorhead with 10 kills while KayLani Penas chipped in eight, seven from Anna Peterson, Abby Tietz had six, five from Andrea Hubka and Laura Holsen contributed four. Moorhead will next take on Perham Sept. 15, 7:30 p.m. in Perham.

Cory Gilbertson recorded 17 digs as Moorhead bounced past West Fargo 25-14, 25-16, 25-17 in volleyball on Thursday. Allison Bruggeman led Moorhead (2-0) with eight kills while KayLani Penas added 23 assists. The Spuds will take on DGF at home on Tuesday, Sept. 8.

WEST FARGO: Gustafson 1-0-1, Barta 2-1-0 (10 assists), Green 4-3-2, Beacher 0-1-0, Holland 2-1-0, Schnepf 2-1-0, Voeller 6-0-0 (11 digs).

Volleyball Takes 3 Straight In Victory Over Monticello

The Spud Volleyball team opened their season with a victory over Monticello by winning 3 straight sets. The first set proved a back and forth affair with the Spuds down 21-23 Moorhead rallied and went on to win the set 25-23. Laura Holsen contributed 11 kills on the night. The second set saw Monticello jump out quickly but the Spuds hung in there and battle back to capture the set 25-11. The 3rd set the Spuds jumped out fast leading 9-3 only to see that lead melt away as Monticello came back and tied it at 18-18. The teams traded points until the Spuds had a 22-20 lead then sealed the match capturing a 25-21 set and match victory. KayLani Penas had 32 assists in the match. The Spuds are now 1-0 and will next take on West Fargo on September 3 at the MHS gym starting at 7:30 p.m.

MONTICELLO (kills-blocks-aces): Sutton 1-0-0 (13 assists), Yohnke 1-0-0, Zimmerman 6-1-1, Anderson 3-0-0, Palmer 4-2-0, Lundin 1-0-0.
