Cross Country Boys & Girls Take First At Shocky Strand Invitational
The Moorhead Boys swept the top three spots in the Varsity Boys meet: Lukas Gemar finished first with a time of 16:13.97, teammate Christian Larsen was second with 17:17.32 and third was Spud Matt Nicolai. In the Girls Varsity race Tayler Janssen took third overall with a time of 15:53.30 and teammate Tayler Polomny took ninth with a time of 16:12.07.

Q & A with Cross Country Coach Tom Dooher
Q: Could we get a recap of last season?
A: "Last season was outstanding on both sides. As we went into the season, like most years, the kids put in a lot of time in the summer. And that's critical for running. So as we entered the season our hopes were high. Both teams were section champions. I think that's the fourth time in the last ten years that has happened. And then in the state meet, our girls team finished fifth, which is the second highest finish ever for the girls in our school's history. And then our boys finished third, which was the best finish ever in Moorhead High's school history. We also happen to have the state champion too, Lukas Gemar, who was only a sophomore. And since they went to AA, he's the first sophomore that has ever won the meet. So he's back, and we're excited about that."
Q: With the new senior class coming in, what do you hope carries over into making this season another successful one?
A: "One of the things that has happened in cross country, is the kids have bought into working in the offseason. And so on the boys side, we lost Tim Lillehaugen and Jacob Lindaas. Great leaders, but what they left behind is how to work. And then on the girls side we lost Liz Hanson, Anna Lipetzk, and Leah Hanson. So that's a big hole on the girls side. But we have a young girls team, so we're hoping that they follow in their footsteps as far as work ethic goes."
Q: Have you decided on team captains for this season?
A: "This year's captains for the boys are Derek Nelson, Lukas Gemar, Matt Nicolai and Tom Wixo. Our girls captains are Karlee Richards, Taylor Polomny, Kaylee Litch, Morgan Christian and Kelly Brammer. All five of those girls are great leaders."
Q: Do you see any minor improvements that need to be made to make this another great year?
A: "On the boys side, we've got veterans coming back. So the growth there shouldn't be too difficult. On the girls side, we're a little bit younger, a little bit more inexperienced. We've got a freshman girl that ran really well at the junior high, and we're expecting a lot out of her. Her name is Taylor Jansen, and we don't want to put a lot of pressure on her, but she's very talented."
Q: What are the strengths of this year's senior class?
A: "In cross country you're really concerned about how much spread there is between your first and fifth runners, because that's who scores for you. And on our boys side, the strength will be how close they finish together. On the girls side, the girls always have a tendency every year to come together at the end. And so our expectations at the beginning are never really high, but somehow they put it together at the end it seems like every year, so we're excited about that."
