Notes from the MSHSL:

No. 3 Seed-Section 2-Waconia (24-6) vs. Section 8-Moorhead (18-11): The Waconia Wildcats return for their third appearance, but first since 1990. They enter the tournament as the No. 3 seed and they’re hoping to win their first championship. The Wildcats knocked off 2009 champion Shakopee in the section semifinals. The Spuds of Moorhead, who were not seeded this year, return to make their first appearance since 2006. This is their 19th appearance. If they win it would be their second title; they won previously in 1988. Neither team was ranked in the final coaches association poll and neither faced any other qualifiers during the regular season.

Matt Duginski plows into the endzone for the Spuds first touchdown of the game in the 3rd quarter against Alexandria. Special thanks to Chuck Anderson for the photo.

Moorhead came out more inspired in the second half scoring on their opening drive with Matt Duginski running into the end zone from 6 yards. Starting the 4th quarter the Spuds had a lightning strike with Jesse Doschadis hitting Chase Morlock for a 72 yard passing play. On the next play Duginski ran the ball in to tie the game at 14-14.

Momentum made a dramatic switch after the Spuds started a drive late in the 4th quarter. First the Spuds got Alexandria to jump offside on a 4 down and 1 deep in the Moorhead end of the field giving the Spuds a first down. But the Spuds could not continue the drive being forced to punt. The long snap was bobbled and the punt was muffed giving the Cardinals the ball at Moorhead's 35 yard line with just over one minute left in the game. Alexandria on the first play had a 34 yard run by Parker Giroux setting up a 1 yard touchdown run by Michael Joerger sealing a win for the Cardinals.

Moorhead's Dylan Nygaard steps up to make a tackle against Alexandria's Parker Giroux.

Moorhead is now 4-4 on the season and will host a Section 8AAAAA quarter-final game on Tuesday at Jim Gotta Stadium. The opponent will be determined later today in the Section seeding meeting.

Moorhead Defeats Rocori 7-0 For 1st Win of the year

The Spuds ground out a 7-0 win at Jim Gotta Stadium Saturday afternoon in front of over 3600 fans. The field was very wet and the wind was blowing creating a grind it out on the ground type of game. Matt Duginski led Moorhead with 23 carries for 92 yards and Sophomore Chase Morlock scored the only touchdown of the game on a 22 yard run in the first quarter. The defense rose to the occasion several times stopping key drives in the second half. Taylor Burns made a key interception in the Spuds endzone stopping a drive. The Spartans from Rocori had a big catch on the Moorhead 4 yard line initially ruled a touchdown but brought back after a conference to the 4 yard line because of the receivers knee being down. The Spuds then proceeded to stuff the next 4 plays and take the ball back on downs. The last drive of the game for Rocori started with less than 2 minutes on the clock and a botched snap to the QB Nathan Meyer in shotgun formation resulted in a rushed throw that was intercepted by Erik Bye sealing the win for Moorhead. The Spuds are now 1-1 on the season and will travel to take on Little Falls next Friday night at 7:00 p.m.

Ashley Stenerson Becomes All-Time Scoring Leader

After tying the all-time scoring record Saturday night Ashley Stenerson quickly answered the question of when will she break the record Tuesday night at the Moorhead Sports Center against Alexandria. Just two minutes and one second into the game on what seemed a routine play in which the Alexandria goalie went back to move the puck away from the back of the goal the puck squirted out in the front of the net and Stenerson was right there to slam it home for point 246 in her career with the Spuds. Stenerson replaces Tanya Reitz(1997-2002) as the all-time points leader in Moorhead Girls Hockey history topping the mark of 245 points by Reitz. Stenerson is also closing in on Reitz who holds the most goals in a single season with 49 compared to Stenerson's 43.
